Voter Registration

Voters can now register to vote online. If you have moved, changed your name, or if it’s been four years since you last voted, you will need to re-register. In order to register online, you must have a current and valid Wisconsin Driver’s License or ID card. Simply go to myvote.wi.gov to start the registration process. Online registrations can only occur during open registration. Open registration is all times except for the 20 days immediately preceding each election. During open registration, voters can also mail in a complete Voter Registration Application along with valid Proof of Residence to the City Clerk. During late registration (those 20 days prior to each election), registration can only occur in person, at the Clerk’s office. Voters can also register to vote at the polls on Election Day.

When registering to vote by mail, in the Clerk’s office, or on Election Day, valid Proof of Residence is required. All Proof of Residence documents must include the voter’s name and current residential address. The following documents can be used as Proof of Residence (provided they include the voters current name and address):

  • Current and valid State of Wisconsin Driver’s License or State ID card.
  • Any other official identification card or license issued by a Wisconsin governmental body or unit.
  • Any identification card issued by an employer in the normal course of business and bearing a photo of the card holder, but not including a business card.
  • Real estate tax bill or receipt for the current year or the year preceding the date of the election.
  • University, college or technical college identification card (must include photo) ONLY if the voter provides a fee receipt dated within the last 9 months or the institution provides a certified housing list to the municipal clerk.
  • Utility bill for the period commencing no earlier than 90 days before Election Day.
  • Bank or credit card statement.
  • Paycheck or paystub.
  • Check or other document issued by a unit of government.
  • Letter on public or private social service agency letterhead identifying a homeless voter and describing the individual’s residence for voting purposes.
  • Residential lease that is effective on date of registration. (Not valid if registering by mail.)
  • Intake document from a residential care facility such as a nursing home or assisted living facility.

This is not a comprehensive list, but categories of the most common types used by voters. Additional information on Proof of Residence can be found by clicking the Proof of Residence Information link below.

Voters without a valid Wisconsin Driver’s License or State ID can receive a free State ID from their local DMV if you specifically request a free ID for voting purposes. Click here for more info. https://bringit.wi.gov/how-do-i-get-free-state-id-card.
